The 6th World Nomad Games Turn Issyk-Kul Into a Living Nomadic Capital

United in Strength, United in Spirit: Issyk-Kul Becomes the Nomadic World’s Stage Through September 6

World Nomad Games 2026

Imagine a lakeside arena where horse games, craft markets, science talks, and national leaders meet in the same week. The 6th World Nomad Games opened on August 31, 2026, at Bishkek Arena and are underway across Issyk-Kul through September 6, giving visitors a concentrated taste of Central Asian nomadic life. It is sport, culture, and science in one setting.

Kyrgyzstan entered this edition with new control. In December 2025, it received brand holder status for the World Nomad Games, giving it authority over rules, concept, and format for future editions.

The opening ceremony then drew leaders from nine countries, including the presidents of Türkiye, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Belarus, and Uzbekistan.

The slogan, “United in strength, united in spirit,” frames the gathering as shared heritage rather than spectacle. That ambition is clearly visible. It also signals Kyrgyzstan’s intent to keep the Games rooted in nomadic memory and future.

Where the Games Take Place Around Cholpon-Ata

The main sporting and cultural events are held in the Issyk-Kul resort region, primarily in Cholpon-Ata and surrounding areas. Venues include the Cholpon-Ata hippodrome, the Gazprom Sports Complex, the Rukh-Ordo Ethno-Complex, and the Kychyn area.

Over 2,300 athletes, coaches, and delegation members from 106 countries are competing in 43 national and traditional sports. The program also includes hundreds of cultural events and an international scientific program examining the history and legacy of nomadic societies.

The international ethnic festival draws participants from about 40 countries for ethno-fashion, ethno-dance, traditional music, and storytelling. Ticket demand is high, and the kok-boru and kokpar finals on September 6 have sold out completely.

A fan zone in Bayet village on the Issyk-Kul coast serves fans without tickets. Security is coordinated from a new four-story situational center in Bosteri, opened by the Kyrgyz Ministry of Internal Affairs and equipped with digital video cameras. That helps keep the lakeside atmosphere lively.

Crafts, Cuisine, and the Next Games

On September 4, First Lady Aigul Japarova visited the “Universe of Nomads” ethno-village in Kychyn to support local artisans and observe traditional crafts.

For visitors, the Games offer a concentrated display of Central Asian nomadic culture: traditional sports, crafts, and cuisine set against Issyk-Kul’s scenic shoreline. The next chapter is already forming. Russia has announced readiness to host the 7th World Nomad Games in Tatarstan in 2028.

Kyrgyzstan has pledged comprehensive support for the transition, passing on a format it controls.

If you are at Issyk-Kul before September 6, the value is simple: you can watch horseback sport, buy handmade crafts, taste local food, and hear nomadic stories without traveling across the region. The finals may be sold out, but the fan zone gives you a way to join the mood. Bring your passport, patience, and appetite, because this week turns the lake into a living classroom. It is a rare chance to feel why nomadic traditions still matter today. They are not frozen displays. They are living traditions.
