About the North Shore

Plan your Issyk-Kul lake holiday on the Issyk-Kul north shore and your days slow down. You step onto warm sandy beaches or sand-and-pebble coves, where a gently sloping shallow near-shore entry warms faster in summer than much of the south shore. The Kungey Ala-Too mountains rise directly north of the lake and create dramatic mountain-and-lake scenery. Summer evenings in Cholpon-Ata and Bosteri stay lively with promenades, cafes, vendors and seasonal entertainment.

This is the lake’s most developed and popular holiday area, with continuous tourism infrastructure including hotels, guesthouses, sanatoriums, restaurants, beaches, water-sport operators and nightlife. The main resort belt runs from Toru-Aygyr and Balykchy in the west to Korumdu in the east, with the highest concentration between Tamchy, Cholpon-Ata and Bosteri. Because everything sits close along the coast, you can hop between towns easily.

Beaches and Swimming

Plan your beach holiday on the north shore where warm shallows, sandy stretches, and mountain views meet. The gently sloping near-shore entry warms faster in summer than much of the south shore, making it a simple choice for a lake holiday. Choose this coast for clear days, dry air, active beaches, and cool evenings, with full resort operations in July and August.

What the Beaches Are Like

The beaches on the north shore are commonly sandy or sand-and-pebble with a gently sloping shallow entry near shore. This shallow near-shore water warms faster in summer than much of the south shore, especially from June to September.

At Cholpon-Ata, you get lakeside beaches with promenades, cafes, vendors and seasonal entertainment. Bosteri has a renovated central municipal beach, updated in 2025, about 1,430 metres long with large rides and water-slide attractions, while Kara-Oy and Sary-Oy offer organized family-friendly beaches at their resort compounds.

Water Temperature by Month

Swim from June to September for the best beach holiday. July and August bring peak warm water and full resort operations. June or September suit you if you want fewer crowds and still suitable swimming. May and October are generally too cool for most swimmers.

May Too cool Not swimmable
June 16–19°C Swimmable
July 19–24°C Peak warmth
August 20–24°C Warmest
September 17–20°C Swimmable
October Too cool Not swimmable

Water Sports

Water sports are widely available in summer, with jet skis, banana boats, catamarans, parasailing, speedboat rides, paddleboarding, windsurfing and kitesurfing. The area can have steady winds that suit wind sports like windsurfing and kitesurfing. Choose supervised operators and match the activity to your comfort.

Beach Safety

Use supervised and clearly designated beaches, watch children closely, and do not swim beyond buoys. Wear life jackets for water activities, and avoid swimming in strong winds or storms. The north shore sits at high altitude, about 1,600-1,700 m, where strong UV radiation and dry air make sun care essential throughout the beach day. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, drinking water, and light layers for cool evenings.

Attractions and Culture

Use the north shore as your base for beach time, cultural stops, and mountain day trips from one place. Cholpon-Ata keeps the lake close while petroglyphs, cultural centers, gorges, and event sites sit within easy reach. Match lake days with the right excursions, from boat trips and fishing to mountain valleys, red rocks, canyon landscapes, and hot springs.

Historic site

Petroglyph Field

Bronze Age rock carvings

Cholpon-Ata has an open-air petroglyph field with Bronze Age rock carvings located near the town. You can walk among the stones and look for carved images left by ancient people, with no museum wall between you and the rock surface. The site puts history in the open — take time to compare marks on different rocks and see how this field links Cholpon-Ata to its Bronze Age past.

Cultural center

Ruh Ordo Cultural Complex

Lakeside cultural center

The Ruh Ordo cultural complex is a lakeside cultural center on the north shore where visitors can learn about Kyrgyz traditions beside the water. It gives you exhibits, event spaces, and open areas beside the lake, so you can move between culture, water, and walking space in one stop. It pairs well with a beach visit or a day in the mountains.

Excursions

Day Trips and Excursions

Gorges, canyons & lake activities

Start with Grigorievka and Semenovka gorges, mountain valleys north of the lake accessible from Cholpon-Ata for day trips, and add Chon-Ak-Suu when you want more mountain time. Reach farther for Jeti-Oguz, a famous red rock gorge near Karakol, then consider Skazka Canyon (Fairy Tale Canyon) on the south shore. On the lake, choose boat trips and fishing, while horseback riding and yurt visits give you cultural activities away from the beach. Many stays also pair the north shore with Karakol for trekking, skiing, and hot springs such as Altyn-Arashan.
